Imamura selects a few themes, mostly on the opposition between the three people he interviews (differences of class, background) and otherwise lets them reminisce about the horrors of war. Two out of three of the interviewees do most of the talking while the third one seems to have forgotten his native tongue (yet still seems loyal to the emperor). It's not as messy as it sounds but there are fleeting moments of anger that seep through (especially when the emperor is mentioned, the status of this figure being divisive among the interviewee). It should be seen if only as a preamble to Muhomatsu Returns Home.

十一伏特 说：找到留居泰国三个日本老兵边喝边聊，聊着聊着都聊嗨了，什么都敢说出口。一个是亲手点着汽油烧死三万多人的战争杀人狂，杀过无数妇女儿童，连思乡的日本宪兵同胞都杀过。战败26年后还相信日本军会打回来。 一个是战争期间没参与暴行，坚决抵制战争，大骂天皇一无是处，完全不信那一套。 而衣着最体面的一位，都快忘记日语的表达，则很少参与说话，听到痛骂天皇时还是受不了，要起身离座。 三个人代表的恰是完全不同的思想状态。今村昌平最后总结升华：“他们曾是大阪的镀铁工人、茨城的农民和长崎的不良少年。把他们胡乱盲目地赶出来战斗，而一旦战败就把他们扔在外面不管不顾地人，到底是谁呢？”
发条辰 说：今村昌平13/弃民系列2 比马来篇更深刻，三个人物分别代表了三种不同的心境，有已经对于杀人麻木可以侃侃而谈还原以为帝国而战的、又厌恶天皇的纯反面教材、也有穿着体面点已经忘却战争但依然渴望回国的…今村昌平在抓战后未归士兵的心理和这种国民精神方面真的是透彻，什么都没说，但好像把所谓的帝国和背后的辛酸都解释清楚了，这就是这种纪录片传递的一种画面之外的意义。
CC 说：在今村昌平的片子里看到的是对于战争的反省，即便同样是日本士兵，也是不同的，有始终忠于天皇的，时刻等待着被召回重新完成大业的，也有反对战争，觉得应该更关注人，关注人性的，也还有赞同战争的。但他们都是被抛弃的一群人
