I would argue that Lee's incisive sociological observation and his compassion for the plight of his characters are actually bogged down by the procedural melodrama of Price. At the end of the day, Lee captures the sense of powerlessness against the cycle of drug-related exploitation and violence within inner-city black communities, and it is hard not to view this as a direct precursor and inspiration to the Wire.
