The message I get from this film: the world is on fire, the world is on its own fire lit by death, decadence, destitution, terrorism, bereavement, despair, and an eternal lack of meaning. In this perpetually precarious world we eat, sleep, vomit, squirm, dance, sex, bleed, smile, scream, kiss loved ones on the forehead, sob, and eventually we close our eyes. Jarman paints his England in strong, abstract and unnatural colours that echo expressionism, and with endless succession of erratic, dream-like fragments of moving pictures he seems to be whispering in our ear: the last of England lasts and never ends.
