First half is great, constructing a chilling portrait of two not dissimilar predators (Nicholson’s up-front about it, Garfunkel’s deceptively “nice”), but Nichols loses his thematic grip in the latter half and gives Nicholson too many opportunities to showboat, until the film collapses from exhaustion. Still, this is remarkably modern for its day.
