看的版本有长长的prelude。看到一半还以为是兄弟俩duel in the sun,结果……不少地方用的棚景,最后血染山岩用了手绘特效,但外景拍得真是雄浑壮阔,特别是牧场与火车对峙一场,是大西部特有的魅力。格里高利·派克的邪魅浪子形象很出彩,与渴望成为淑女却难以克服出身和不安全感的女主一起谱出一曲悲剧恋歌。黑女仆被完全当做智龄只有七岁的孩子来刻画,种族歧视看得人很不舒服。
In Duel in the Sun, Pearl's inability to become a 'lady' is highlighted by the fact that the perfect lady appears, like a phantasmagoria of Pearl's failed aspiration, as Jesse's perfect future wife. In an earlier film by King Vidor, Stella Dallas (1937), narrative and iconographic structures similar to those outlined above make the dramatic meaning of the film although it is not a Western. —Laura Mulvey
电影的文化意义太明显了:东部与西部、法律与暴力、民族与身份认同。电影用了一个浪荡子与混血女的爱情故事作为外壳。影片最后的一场一对一的枪战,本来要一扫心中全部的恨与屈辱,却因为一句“i love you"而变成了一场相拥而死的苦情戏。两人侧面飞奔的场面真漂亮,Lillian Gish演绎母亲丝毫不逊色。
King Vidor Retrospective重看,MoMA馆藏。坐在钢琴前唱着beautiful dreamer的Lillian Gish分明自己就是那个美丽梦中人。艳光逼人的Jennifer Jones在已近中年的她身边说I want to be more like you也不觉得有什么问题,毕竟谁又不想呢?
